First record of Bryum gemmiparum de Not. from The Netherlands. The taxonomy and distribution of the species are discussed. Bryum gemmiparum was collected in a clay-pit along the river Maas in the north of the province of Limburg. This locality seems to be the northernmost one known of the species. Bryum gemmiparum was found growing on steep, rather humid, loamy soils in a luxuriant cover of bryophytes characterized by Anisothecium varium, Riccardia sinuata, Riccardia pinguis, Bryum bicolor, Didymodon tophaceus, and Mniobryum wahlenbergii. A floristical and ecological investigation of this highly interesting bryophyte vegetation in The Netherlands is needed. |

In the former century Byblis was mostly included in the Droseraceae, for example by BENTHAM & HOOKER. f. (Gen. P1. 1, 1859, 220); even ENGLER had it in that position in 1912 (Syllabus ed. 7, 329). PLANCHON had in 1848 (Ann. Sc. Nat. III, 9, 1848, 80, 90) already pointed to affinity with Cheiranthera of the Pittosporaceae; HALLIER f. merged Byblis and Roridula with Tremandraceae, curiously referring this to an Ochnaceous assemblage (Abh. Gebiete Naturw. Hamburg 18, 1903, 53). About the same time LANG argued (Flora 88, 1901, 179) that on morphological and anatomical grounds Byblis cannot belong to Droseraceae, but should be referred to Lentibulariaceae. DIELS (Pfl. R. Heft 26, 1907, 51) and DOMIN (Act. Bot. Bohem. 1, 1922, 1) definitely concluded to the... |

Sinistrorsely twining herbs with white milky juice. Leaves spirally arranged, simple or lobed to varying degrees, cordate, palmatinerved, long-petioled, glabrous as is the stem, exstipulate. Flowers bisexual, or polygamous (andromonoecious), small, subsessile, in unilateral repeatedly forked cincinni, composed of loose axillary panicles, ebracteate. Calyx deeply (4-)5-partite, lobes imbricate in bud, whether or not slightly accrescent in fruit, persistent. Petals (4—)5, caducous, lower half forming a widely funnel-shaped corolla, lobes imbricate in bud. Stamens (4-)5 inserted on the upper part of the corolla tube, alternate with its lobes; filaments very short, glabrous; anthers medifixed, introrse; pollen grains oblate, triangular in polar view,... |

The sterile hybrid Carex otrubae Podp. X Carex paniculata L., new for the Netherlands, was discovered in five localities along the IJsselmeer in the province of Friesland (fig. 1). Together with the parents it grows there abundantly on sandy and wet forelands, in an unstable vegetation rich in species of the Agropyro-Rumicion crispi and the Filipendulion. Compared with the parents, the hybrid has intermediate characters as is shown in the figures 2 and 3. |

Representatives of the family Ceramonematidae (Cobb, 1933) were found untill now mainly in shallow sandy bottoms. The five species mentioned hereunder, from which four are new ones were recovered from mud in the « Golfe du Lion » (Mediterrranean) at a depth of 310-580 m. A male specimen of Ceramonema chitwoodi De Coninck, 1942 is described. Two new species are added to the genus Metadasynemella: M. falciphala and M. cassidiniensis. Pselionema deconincki sp.n. is the first species of this genus with vacuolisations in the cuticle. Pselionema minutum sp.n. is a very small species. |

Twenty-one pastoralists in the West Darling region of New South Wales were interviewed to gain an understanding of the attitudes of managers in this high-risk pastoral area to uncertain prospects. It was found that pastoralists had no difficulty in specifying subjective probabilities but in modifying probabilistic information they were conservative relative to the 'correct' revision implied by Bayes' Theorem. All the surveyed pastoralists were non-indifferent to risk, as evidenced by their non-linear utility functions for gains and losses. |

Standard methods were used to assess the effectiveness of 101 products for use against oil slicks. Products were emulsifiers, agglomerants or precipitants and were tested against oil from Edjele, Kuwait and Syria. For each kind of product, a review is given of the previous tests, the choice of methods is discussed, the methodology is described, and results are presented and interpreted. In addition, the relationship between physical properties and effectiveness is discussed, with graphical examples and the advantages and disadvantages are indicated. It is concluded that at present no 'miracle' product exists for use in this field. Agglomerating powders would be ideal were it not for problems in putting them to use, and, wind because of the need to use them... |
